Rabbit Safety
Bunny proofing your home: Bunny proofing your home is necessary before you get a bunny, for both their safety and the safety of your home.
- Make sure no electrical outlets or wires are in reach, Bunnies find wire fun to chew, but this can lead to electric shock.
- Rabbits like to chew furniture. Putting corner protectors on them or making your own can help, and so can providing other things for your rabbit to chew.
- Keep plants out of reach. Many plants can be toxic to rabbits, so keep them off the ground and out of reach.
- Bitter sprey can make things taste really bad to your rabbit, so they won’t chew it.
What NOT to buy for your rabbit.
There are tons of products out there marketed towards rabbits that are actually harmful to them. Here are some of them:
- Toxic litter- rabbit can be litter trained, but using safe litter is important. Clumping litter, sold for cats and ceder or pine shavings are all toxic to bunnies, so make sure whatever litter you choose is safe.
- Rabbit leashes- Don’t use them. If your rabbit gets startled by something, they will try to bolt and might end up strangling themselves. Even if that doesn’t happen, they can cause strain on them.
- Salt and mineral licks- These can cause your rabbit to get too much sodium, a balanced diet is all they need!
- Unhealthy treats- Seeds and nuts are bad for your rabbit and those colorful commercial treats contain seeds, nuts and other unhealthy ingredients. This can cause them to gain too much weight, along with other diet issues. Try healthier treats, such as carrots or banana instead.
- Yogurt drops- while your rabbit might find them tasty, it contains way too much sugar, and your rabbit would love a healthier treat just as much anyway.
- Wood toys made out of toxic woods- while wooden chew toys can be great, if you don’t know what kind of wood its made out of, dont buy it. Only buy chew toys made of safe woods, such a kiln dried pine or apple.
- Vitamin drops- unless your vet suggests them, most of the time they are unnecessary, since a balanced diet is enough.
- Critter pops- Critter pops are made from ingredients that are hard for your rabbit to digest, and their is no nutritional benefits. Since there are better treat options, don’t buy this.
