Guinea pig Safety
The safety of your pet is important, and often, seemingly safe thing can actually be dangerous. Here are some products that are marketed towards guinea pigs that can be dangerous for them.
- Metal ball hay holders: Metal, ball shaped hanging hay holders are often advertised for guinea pigs. You should avoid it as guinea pigs can get their head stuck in it.
- Hay rack with holes big enough for their head: for the same reason as the balls, Guinea pig can get their head stuck.
- Hamster wheels and balls: Your guinea pigs need exercise, but a guinea pigs body is not meant to move in the way these toys require and can injure them. instead, to make sure your guinea pig gets exercise, provide a cage that’s big enough and lots of free time roaming outside the cage.
- Leashes and harnesses: Small leashes and harnesses are often advertised for guinea pigs, and while taking your guinea pig for a walk might sound fun, the pull on their back can seriously injure them or even kill them.
- Cedar or non-kiln dried pine bedding: Guinea pigs are prone to respiratory diseases, and both of these bedding types contain toxins for guinea pigs.
